A DAY AT VERSOVA JETTY, FERRY RIDE TO AND FRO MADH ISLAND

Photo Travelogue :

I winced my nose at the typical dried fish odor as soon as I got down the metro at Versova. The sea was little away ( 3kms or so ), but the stench was overwheming. There must be some fish market nearby, I thought to myself as I got down the stairs and looked for an auto. Versova is quite an upmarket place, but, I wonder how its residents lived with the constant 'fishy' smell. I'd never be able to. Anyways, the metred auto that cost me about 30 bucks, dropped me about 1 km or so at the start of a narrow lane, which he said would take me to the jetty. I walked for sometime and after a point had to take a left turn and kept walking. It was a good 15 minutes walk in a heavily congested road, which the auto had said would take just 2 minutes. Anyways, I saw the jetty sign at last and its colourful boats docked that indicated that I had reached the jetty spot. I heaved a sigh of huge relief. I followed few other people who were boarding the boats that would take them to the other side. Its a barely 5 minutes ride ( maybe even less ), because, the other bank is just couple of feet away.

The ride cost 5-10 and 15 if someone takes their scooty or bike along. Its a busy jetty and the flow of passengers is constant throughout the day. It was a bright sunny day so I enjoyed the experience ( sans the fish smell ). Not sure how it'd be during rainy days. To go to Madh Island, the jetty is the main short-cut way along with an alternate bus route that comes from Borivali end, and is longer ( although more scenic with tall trees and mangroves on both sides ). There's also plans of a bridge coming up that'd connect it to Versova. The island, its fort and beaches often shows up in bollywood movies and songs. I was there to explore the madh fort and the haunted madh-marve road. Read all about them in my coming posts.

Versova originally named Vesave, is a small fishing village of the Kolis, situated to the north of the old Mumbai city. The native population or the 'kolis' sells fish at Versova jetty at wholesale prices ( wiki ).
