The Book Summary : "Sidelined By Man, Animals Turned To Demons.
Plundered by humans of their habitats, animals take a drastic step when they decide to send a team of a cat named as Katy and a dog named as Dug, to an invisible island known, as the Island of ‘Five Hundred Graves’. The island becomes visible only for a short time on the night of the full moon. Legend has it that the island is inhabited by the demons. Katy and Dug are supposed to negotiate a deal with the demons, convincing them to allow the animals inhabit the island. Majority of the animal community believe that tinkering with the other world could bring their wrath to the animals. The team is sent to the island nevertheless.
But can a deal with the dead be materialized?
Are there really demons on the island? Is there any conspiracy involved?
Will Katy and Dug be able to negotiate, or will survival remain their only question in the deadly island?"
My Point of View ( P.O.V ) : The cover and title of the book had me interested from the very onset, but for sometime my actually reading of the book was bit delayed. Gladly, I was able to finally read it and let me say outright, I've not yet come across such a book. I had to specially adjust my reading tempo ~ 'cos the book was really different with all its unique characters and plot. The more I flipped through the pages, more my interest grew and more I became involved in the story. Yes, its quite engaging. You can't help but wonder what's gonna happen next.
A fantasy book, it takes you to some other world altogether. Demons, monsters, cats, dogs, lion, bird etc ~ you can guess what the story would be about. The protagonists are mainly the cat - Katy and the dog - Dug; though the other characters fill up the story quite aptly too. There is also a message in the book about the underlying conflict between animals and humans in the world; with the latter encroaching upon and destroying the former's natural habitat for its own selfish reasons. Though the animals dislike certain qualities of mankind, they kinda like few others too - thus, it is not a hate-all-mankind type book at all. In the book, to find a place of their own, the animal community has to look at other options like negotiating with the darker elements. Some in the community fear, that such a deal might backlash upon them. I loved the description of the mysterious dark 'five hundred graves' island ( invisible except for sometime on full-moon's day ), its Gate ( Devil's ), Palace ( Vanora ), ancient Curse ( Vanora's ), the evil Soul ( Penacus ) ~ all having their own tale. I must admit though, I didn't really get scared reading it, but can't say for others. ( 'cos different books have different affect on people )
Though at the beginning, I wasn't too sure about the story-line of the book, I must admit, I did quite enjoy it in the end. Kudos to the debutante author for pulling it off and offering something really unique to the readers. One can imagine the hard work put in to create such an imaginary world and actually being able to transport the readers there while reading it. Would love to read more from the author.
P.S : I always feel these kinda fantasy themes make a good story visually too, so it'll be great if some kinda comic book or animated movie comes out. It'll be lapped up by the audience for sure.
Positives : Easy, simple lucid style writing, the story is quite an adventure because of its vivid, descriptive narration. Highly recommended if you love this genre. There is scope for a sequel too.
Negatives : None, except some edit errors.
Who will enjoy this? - Everyone! esp Fantasy fans.
