I have been to Surat twice ~ back to back visits.

Day Two - I visited the police station, the very next day, near its Railway Station.
Why did I visit the police station? Read on...to know!

The 'REAL' Adventure...

So, all was good. Satisfied, that I could cover Dumas Beach, with few spooky things happening too while there, I was all set to return. I got a general ticket again, but decided to enter a reserved compartment and get my ticket upgraded by the TC. The trains back to Bombay were full, and general tickets are valid for all trains. I waited in the platform, checking all the pictures I had clicked, till the train came. I was carrying two phones. One was attempted to be stolen earlier, remember? Anyhow, the train arrived, and I hurriedly put my phones in the outer pocket of my backpack, and got up to board. All these while, I was ignorant if anyone was keeping eyes on me. I got inside the train. It was packed like anything. I heard a zipper open behind my back. I wasn't sure it was mine, till I actually got a seat to sit on. Its when I noticed my bag zipper was open, and my new phone was missing. I checked and checked, yes, it was indeed gone. I alerted few people that my phone was stolen. The train had already started moving by then. I called frantically from my other phone. Someone picked up, but, cut it off hurriedly after saying 'hello'.

It was with someone, not missing! I got frantic and started asking people around if anyone had my phone. None did. I was told to report the theft in an upcoming station. Then suddenly, my phone rang. It was a call from my stolen phone. A man spoke. He said, he had got the phone lying somewhere; and asked me to go to the general compartment to get it from him. It was few coaches behind where I was - the reserved coach. When the train halted at a station, I got down and ran wildly to the general coach. The man called again, saying he was near the toilet door. There were many toilet doors, which one? I kept asking, but he would not say and kept the phone down. The train started moving again...and this time, I was in the crowded general compartment, wondering which of the many many faces had my phone. Everyone simply started back at me. It was like some horror movie. I asked another man to call up from his phone. This time, the man would not pick up. Later, after trying many times, he did pick...and started abusing, saying he had already got down in Vapi. Come get it - he challenged. By this time, I was convinced my phone was stolen. He called up on my phone and abused me as well. Phone chahiye #@*$ - aake le ja...

at dahanu station...12.53am...

SURAT CITY
reached Bombay at 2.40am...

I got down in Dahanu Road to file a report - that my phone was stolen. But, the RPF there said it was just an outpost, and that I should report it in Vapi where the man had got off. I couldn't do anything, so took a late night train back. It was almost 2.40 am when I finally reached Bombay. It was so late or rather so early in the morning ( 2.40 am ), in Dadar, that I was worried my building gates would be closed ( read ~ locked ) then. So, whole night I spent in the station itself, killing mosquitoes. A TC came by and asked me, what I was doing alone in the platform so late, and told me to go home; I related my incident. He listened sympathetically, but couldn't really do anything, and so went on with his duty. Sigh! With my fav phone stolen, my heart was broken that day...

The next day, early morning, I took a train to Surat ( from Borivali ) and got down in Vapi station to report. But, I was informed that I should report it in Surat, where the phone was stolen. Bombay-Surat is a busy route and there are frequent trains, so I hopped in another one and reached Surat. The RPF station is near the Railway station, just behind the bus-stop. To cut things short, they took information about my phone - its serial number and IMEI/MEID etc, also a written complaint. But till date, four years have passed, I haven't got my baby back. Weirdest thing I remember, is the person who wrote the report asking me to file the complaint as 'lost' and not stolen. This, after all the abuses and threats I had got from the thief himself ~ which I informed the police too. Makes me wonder if they are hands-in-gloves with them - the police and thieves! Phew!

Surat beside the Tapi River, is a city in the Indian state of Gujarat. It used to be a large seaport and is now a centre for diamond cutting and polishing. Once known for silk weaving, Surat remains a commercial center for textiles. Overlooking the river, Surat Castle was built in the 1500s to defend the city against Portuguese colonists. Nearby, the Dutch, Armenian and English cemeteries contain elaborate colonial-era tombs. ( wiki ).

VISITING THE DUMAS BEACH, SURAT, INDIA'S MOST HAUNTED BEACH !

Photo Travelogue :
Read first part - Here!

If you've read my spook-travel series ( on this blog itself ), you'll discover that I have been covering some of the most haunted and unusual places in India, in all my travels. And, if you've read my previous post, you'll know what risk I took to visit the Dumas beach, in Surat. I stopped mid-way, then went back to Surat and travelled to Dumas. Since I was passing by, I just could not skip it. And boy, was I glad that I visited it after all. Because, unlike the other haunted places that I had visited so far, its the only one where I actually heard and felt something spooky ~ that too, in broad day light. The other places are also spooky no doubt, its just that I didn't come across anything paranormal as such. I'd surely be scared if I'm totally alone in those places. Coming back to Dumas, I reached it at almost 5pm. Thankfully, it wasn't dark yet, being the western shore.

there is a narrow stretch of land connecting the mainland with the beach...

on reaching the beach, at first glance around...I found...

the beach has various food stalls on one side, near the entrance...

it has various recreations too, like horse and camel rides...

ship of the desert...there were many of these...

DUMAS BEACH, SURAT
there is also a small Ganesh Temple near the entrance...

then, I noticed the colour of the sand...
DUMAS BEACH, SURAT
its black, unlike any other beach I've been to...
Rumour has it, the beach once used to serve as hindu crematorium grounds, and that's why its black in colour ~ the ashes got mixed with the original sand over time, and turned black. I asked the auto wala if he knew anything of it, he looked uneasy in telling me. He asked another man in the beach ( some hawker ), and the latter pointed that the crematorium had shifted to another place now. This explains, why the beach is haunted! Its all human ashes beneath the feet...

I saw some people far away enjoying the waters, and decided to walk till there...

and then, spook happened...
DUMAS BEACH, SURATDUMAS BEACH, SURAT
I left the people behind ( near the entrance ) and started to walk. There was no one near me. But strangely, I didn't feel alone. I kept looking around. There was absolutely none, as I was walking far and far away. The beach, anyways, didn't have much people in it that day. I heard someone calling out my name. With the breeze blowing, the name sounded sing-song type. I wondered, if it was the breeze itself. But breezes normally has a whoooosh..., wheeeee or kinda whistling sound, whereas, this sound was human, faint - as though, someone was crying out my name in pain. I kept looking around. It was impossible, because, no human was near me. And the sound came from near, as though, from under the ground. Naaannn...dddiii...nnniii....!!! I tried to ignore and walked ahead. Then, there was suddenly a chorus of sounds - all crying out my name. I got really spooked then. Who knew my name? With my hair standing up in my neck, I tried to be brave and clicked pics of the place where the sound was coming from. It did scare me a bit, but bravely I walked ahead a little more, and then all the way back, crossing the same spot again.
Rumour has it, people do feel someone near them, walking past or breathing down their neck etc, when actually there's no one around, and also hear their names being called out in a musical manner; and the fact that, it happened to me too really made me ecstatic!! I had felt someone near me, and also heard my name; not once, but couple of times, by one voice first, and then, a chorus. I love doing spook hunting, and for the first time I was actually experiencing what I had heard or read about earlier ( besides other personal experiences ). It was really incredible.

There are also stories about people disappearing and never returning till this day, or dead body found the next day, especially if they go to the beach after dark. I didn't want that to happen to me, and so, as the sun was going down...I decided to come back to civilization...fast!

AN IMPROMPTU STOP AT SURAT CITY TO VISIT THE FAMOUS HAUNTED DUMAS BEACH

Photo Travelogue :
Read first part - Here!

If you thought my Gujarat Trip till now was pretty adventurous, what with the never-ending road trips et all through the deserts, hold your breath, my 'real' adventure was about to start the next day only, when I decided to stop at Surat. Surat is about four hours from Bombay and a day trip is doable. While returning from Gujarat, I'd reach Surat early morning, so I planned to stop and go to the very famous haunted beach ~ The Dumas! I could return home by evening. But only thing was, I forgot to get down in Surat and had crossed it. We had already reached Dahanu Road in Maharashtra ( 2 hours from Surat ). It was already 12.30pm by then. I was like ~ oh..shit, no! This can't be happening. How did I miss the Surat station ( at around 10 am ); the train did stop there. I was in big dilemma, to forget Dumas altogether or take a risk and get down in Dahanu, take a train back to Surat and visit it, and still be back by an evening train. Whew!! I did exactly what my mind told me, and got down ~ in Dahanu Road. I didn't want to miss Dumas Beach at any cost!

SURAT CITY
Methinks, watching this human-hanuman in the train made me miss Surat...Hmph!

SURAT CITYSURAT CITY
I bought a general ticket in Dahanu Rd, and got up on a train going to Surat side...

Since I got in an AC coach by mistake, got down in Vapi and boarded a crowded
general compartment...It wasn't summer then, else, it'd have been unbearable...
I felt a guy trying to steal my phone, and, I raised a ruckus inside, lol...
( from Vapi, one can go to Silvassa too, known for its varied tribal heritage )

SURAT CITY
within two hours we reached Surat...it was already 4pm

since we were running late already, I opt for an auto @400/- round trip...

I told the auto to drive fast, he literally flew across Surat City...

SURAT CITY
leaving the city behind, the suburb was quiet and less crowded...

SURAT CITY
passing the Surat Airport, we reached a circle at the end of the long road...

SURAT CITYSURAT CITY
take right turn, then left...the lanes get quite spooky here...

SURAT CITY
till we reach the long narrow stretch that goes to the Dumas Beach...
( from Surat city it took about 40 minutes to reach the beach )
and it gets only more and more adventurous from here on...
