BANGALORE | BENGALURU CITY WALK - IN PICTURES

These are just random city shots that I clicked when I roamed around the city ( while traversing different parts of it ). Do let me know if you spot any known landmark. I didn't find the city that great as I had heard for all these years. I went in March last year, and it was hot as hell. Its just another Indian city with nothing much to rave about. However, do go through my earlier posts - you may come across something of interest. So, lets start the city walk. Well...for most part its via vehicles that I clicked. And some of course, while walking about too :-)


While in Bangalore, I traveled quite a bit in their green-yellow auto. They don't run according to meter, which is quite a headache as you have to negotiate the fare beforehand :| Try quoting half of what they demand and then work through it, till you reach a bargain somewhere. I didn't travel the buses, except for going out of Bangalore city to Nandi Hills and Bannerghata. But I gather buses would be a lot cheaper, however, knowing which bus exactly to take might need some getting used to the city first especially when some of the location's names are tongue-twisters.



Spotted Nandini, my namesake! WooHoo! Well, this was a surprise. I had heard long ago that 'Nandini' was a famous Milk company based in Karnataka. So, that explains its presence everywhere. And I mean EVERYWHERE! on trucks too. Something like a...err Mother Diary :s



Who can say anything about the traffic in India. Its the same everywhere. In Bangalore, most of the roads are narrow and conjested too, that had my auto stuck at quite a few traffic-jams :x



Passed by some important Landmarks! Can you make any guesses which are these?

Street Signs! Some had good public messages on them besides the direction and places name.



So, did spot a traffic-free road too, alas!

CUBBON PARK - BANGALORE | BENGALURU

In the beginning, when I had arrived in Bangalore I had hardly seen any trees ( sans a few here and there, scattered ), much less any garden that I had heard so much about - it being a garden city. Well, towards the final leg of my journey I did see quite a bit of greenery. First the greenery of Indira Gandhi Musical Park, 2nd Lal Bagh and on the last day the greenery of Cubbon Park. And it is the latter's greenery that had earned the city the nickname of 'Garden city' over the years, given by those who visited it. I was little surprised to learn that it is mostly a man-created garden ( originating in the 1870's ). A total of 300 acres, a motorable road with cars ( light vehicles ) plying on it, runs through it. It has small stone benches all around it.


I had checked out from my hotel and still had a couple of hours till my train ( return journey ), so I went to the park to sit a while. What was intended as 15 minutes of relaxation, turned into almost 2 hours. I so loved sitting under the trees. There are quite a many of them ( both plants and trees around 6000 in number, can you believe it? some indigenous and many exotic ), and of several variety too. There are some structures and monuments inside the park as well as a children's play area with Toy-Train. Quite a fun and soothing place it is.

Cubbon Park is a landmark 'lung' area of the Bangalore city, located within the heart of city in the Central Administrative Area.

LAL BAGH BOTANICAL GARDENS, BANGALORE

I had heard a lot about this place years ago, and very frequently ( especially about the various flower shows and exhibitions that are held here annually in its massive glass-house, during the National holidays - Republic/Independence Day ), that a visit here was a must in my itinerary. However, I reached pretty late and could only click few pictures with the sun going down fast. I didn't see any flower exhibition, though, I did spot the glass-house. A consolation, eh?



That's me..exhausted after travelling the whole day from one attraction to another!

There are 4 gates to the garden. The one I entered through brought me face-to-face with a huge monolithic rock with a small temple on top. People were either climbing it, sitting on it or talking their selfies/clicking photos. Buying an ice-cream from a vendor, I started to climb it too. The view from top is really nice. Its breezy and for a while it felt like I was on top of the world :-)


I came down the rock and walked the long shaded lane that led to the glass-house. The chirping of the birds, high above in the really tall trees was continuous. Maybe, they too returned home after a long day out and were talking ( in chirp language ) with their families. People were taking their evening walks. There was a sense of calmness that I felt in the garden. Well....trees and gardens always freshens you up. I hope to be back some day and spend more time here.

Lal Bagh or Lal Bagh Botanical Gardens, meaning The Red Garden in English, is a well known botanical garden in southern Bangalore is in 240 acres spread area. Lal Bagh houses India's largest collection of tropical plants ( over 1,000 species flora ), has an aquarium and a lake. The garden also has trees that are over 100 years old. It is open - 6am to 7:00pm. Entry is free - 6am to 9am and 6pm to 7pm. At other times, a fee of Rs.10/- is charged ( Rs. 40/- on weekends/
Public holidays - Rs. 50/-). Entry for school children and the disabled is free all day.

TIPU SULTANS SUMMER PALACE BANGALORE

The palace is located in Old Bangalore near Kalasipalyam bus stand. I was really excited to enter the same premises that once housed Tipu Sultan ( who doesn't know him, duh!). I had already seen another of his palace in Nandi Hills. However, there, we weren't allowed inside, but in this premises we could go and explore. The structure is built of Teak and looks grand. There are lots of pillars, arches and balconies on both sides. It has one upper level. Groundfloor houses a museum with information on Tipu's life. There is also a replica of his pet tiger. Out of curiosity, I asked the guards if anyone saw Tipu's ghost in the compound. They denied, but, had a weird look in their faces. Though, the building looks inviting with people around, I'd be scared to be there all alone, esp after dark. Interestingly, there is a hindu temple just next to the palace. Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace in Bangalore, India, is an example of Indo-Islamic architecture and was the summer residence of the Mysorean ruler Tipu Sultan. Open to public daily - 10am to 6pm & 8.30am to 5.30pm on Sundays; There is an entry fee of Rs.5/- per person for Indians and Rs.100/- per person for foreigners. Photography is allowed ( except inside the ground floor museum ) and there is no special fee for use of a camera.
