AN IMPROMPTU STOP AT SURAT CITY TO VISIT THE FAMOUS HAUNTED DUMAS BEACH

Photo Travelogue :
Read first part - Here!

If you thought my Gujarat Trip till now was pretty adventurous, what with the never-ending road trips et all through the deserts, hold your breath, my 'real' adventure was about to start the next day only, when I decided to stop at Surat. Surat is about four hours from Bombay and a day trip is doable. While returning from Gujarat, I'd reach Surat early morning, so I planned to stop and go to the very famous haunted beach ~ The Dumas! I could return home by evening. But only thing was, I forgot to get down in Surat and had crossed it. We had already reached Dahanu Road in Maharashtra ( 2 hours from Surat ). It was already 12.30pm by then. I was like ~ oh..shit, no! This can't be happening. How did I miss the Surat station ( at around 10 am ); the train did stop there. I was in big dilemma, to forget Dumas altogether or take a risk and get down in Dahanu, take a train back to Surat and visit it, and still be back by an evening train. Whew!! I did exactly what my mind told me, and got down ~ in Dahanu Road. I didn't want to miss Dumas Beach at any cost!

SURAT CITY
Methinks, watching this human-hanuman in the train made me miss Surat...Hmph!

SURAT CITYSURAT CITY
I bought a general ticket in Dahanu Rd, and got up on a train going to Surat side...
Dahanu is a coastal town in Palghar district of Maharashtra state in Konkan division.

SURAT CITYSURAT CITY
Since I got in an AC coach by mistake, got down in Vapi and boarded a crowded
general compartment...It wasn't summer then, else, it'd have been unbearable...
I felt a guy trying to steal my phone, and, I raised a ruckus inside, lol...
( from Vapi, one can go to Silvassa too, known for its varied tribal heritage )

SURAT CITY
within two hours we reached Surat...it was already 4pm

SURAT CITY
the bus-stop near Surat station from where a bus goes to Dumas, no.77?

SURAT CITY
since we were running late already, I opt for an auto @400/- round trip...

SURAT CITYSURAT CITY
I told the auto to drive fast, he literally flew across Surat City...

SURAT CITY
leaving the city behind, the suburb was quiet and less crowded...

SURAT CITY
passing the Surat Airport, we reached a circle at the end of the long road...

SURAT CITYSURAT CITY
take right turn, then left...the lanes get quite spooky here...

SURAT CITY
till we reach the long narrow stretch that goes to the Dumas Beach...
( from Surat city it took about 40 minutes to reach the beach )
and it gets only more and more adventurous from here on...

Surat is a large city beside the Tapi River in the west Indian state of Gujarat. Once known for silk weaving, Surat remains a commercial center for textiles, and the New Textile Market area is lined with fabric shops. Overlooking the river, Surat Castle was built in the 1500s to defend the city against Portuguese colonists. Nearby, the Dutch, Armenian and English cemeteries contain elaborate colonial-era tombs
Dumas Beach is an urban beach along the Arabian Sea, located 21 kilometres southwest of the City of Surat in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is a popular tourist destination in South Gujarat. Dumas Beach is also famous for being in the top 35 haunted spots in India ( wiki ).

ONBOARD THE BHUJ EXPRESS HEADED FOR BHUJ, GUJARAT FROM BOMBAY ( MUMBAI )

Photo Travelogue :

The year was 2015. I was busy ticking off destinations ( within India ) from my bucket list. I had already been to many places that year itself ( go through my earlier posts ), but some still remained and I wanted to tick them off too, fast. I was specially looking for places that I could cover in a single day and be back. White Rann of Kutch and its surrounding attractions, caught my fancy. It could indeed be done in a single day, and the Great Rann Festival was coming up too; so I was over-enthused. I'd travel the night, reach Bhuj early morning; go to White Rann, Kalo Dungar and India bridge...savour whatever other gujarati essence I encounter on my way, and take a night train back - simple haan? And, very doable too! So, without hesitation I set off for Bhuj. Bhuj city, by the way, has many attractions in itself too. Here's my entire journey in pictures ~ enjoy!

the train was a late-afternoon train, but late ~ so grabbed some bites and waited...

took rickshaw to the bus stop where from I'd go to White Rann...

My first impression on Bhuj city was like ~ eh, so this is Modi's gujarat. You can see from above two pictures that I clicked ( while going from the railway station to the bus-stop by rickshaw - 10-15 minutes ride ), its like any other small city ( bit dirty, infact ), and I wonder why Gujarat is so hyped. Bhuj, being the base to go to White Rann, Chota Rann, Mandvi & other popular tourism destinations, surely should've been maintained better. Whatever happened to Swachh Bharat?

~~~
unlike these serene views above, my return trip was totally contrast...
do read on how my phone got stolen and what all I did to get my baby back...
Bhuj, in Kachchh district, is a city in the state of Gujarat, western India. It’s known for its centuries-old buildings, many of which were damaged in a 2001 earthquake. Close to Harmirsar Lake, the 18th-century Aina Mahal palace is elaborately decorated with chandeliers, mirrors and semi-precious stones. Nearby, the Italian Gothic–style Prag Mahal palace has a bell tower that overlooks the city, and a courtyard containing a Hindu temple ( wiki ).
ONBOARD GARIBRATH EXPRESS TO JAIPUR, RAJASTHAN FROM BOMBAY
Photo Travelogue :
Although, it was named 'garibrath', I didn't really find many garibs in the train. The people were either middle or upper-middle class who boarded the train. No beggars were allowed in ( atleast, I didn't see any ). My trip this time was to Rajasthan. I've been to Rajasthan thrice now. All really enriching experiences. The first one was during my college years when I couldn't really click much pics ( no mobile those days ). It was a study trip to the Golden Triangle ( which included parts of Rajasthan - Jaipur & Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary or the Keoladeo Ghana National Park, along with Delhi and Agra circuit ), as I had taken Travel & Tourism as one of my vocational subjects. And, the last two were to be the back-to-back trips to the land of the Maharajas, in the year 2015, when there'd be bombardment of pictures ( becos' I had a mobile now, hehe ). The train journey to Jaipur ( 14-15 hrs long ) takes the northern route, hence, in this journey we pass by Bombay's northern suburbs ( in the western line ) and Gujarat. We don't see the Syhadris or Western Ghats in view, but do encounter various lakes and other water bodies. Those are equally enchanting...
