PAV BHAJI - A MUST TO EAT WHILE IN BOMBAY/MUMBAI

Before Bombay became my home, I used to lap it up as a tourist. Every year when I was in school, I’d hope to ‘go-bombay’ during my holidays. See the picture and you’ll understand why. A plate of hot Pav-Bhaji, so authentic to Bombay ~ it is one dish that can leave your taste-buds rolling ~ and urge you literally to taste it again. It tempted me to come back to Bombay again and again; because, back in my home-town it was quite un-heard of. Not really a ‘healthy’ dish, if you include the huge dollop of butter ( as you can see in the picture ), it is one dish that truly defines the place Amchi-Bambai.

If you are in Bombay, you’ve simply got to taste it. And for one day you gotta ignore those calorie conscious alerts that your mind keeps pinging at you. Because, the butter does add on to the taste, making it irresistible! The onion rings at the sides along with a dash of lemon, makes it so mouthwatering ~ almost as though you are tasting something sinfully-heaven ( if that’s the right word combination to describe the experience ;-)

The first place I ever tasted the dish was at Khao-gali near Victoria Terminus Station ( CST ). Costing merely 10-bucks in early days, its price has now shot up steeply and currently costs 100INR. At 5star+ places, it may cost more, as this is street-food having on the street itself we’re talking about. The place is clean and hygienic, so no other issues there for a quick bite. It’ll make a difference in your life, trust me. You’ll never forget the memory of eating the first Pav Bhaji ~ like I never did. Watching the men prepare it right before your own eyes is another experience altogether.

that butter...ooohhh

Pav bhaji, Paw bhaji or Pao bhaji is a main course staple food of Mumbai, India consisting of a thick spicy vegetable curry served with a soft buttered bread roll. It originated in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra ( wiki ).
Address : Khao Gali, CST/Churchgate.

HOPPITIMES AT HOPIPOLA - MY REVIEW

Alert ~ A picture-heavy post ahead!!

It was on 7th Oct, I made my way to an exclusive BLOGGER'S MEET for some new cocktail tasting at Hoppipola ( a restro-bar ), along with few other bloggers. The place was a little difficult to locate at first, but managed somehow. Its at a walking distance from the station ( towards left and main road side, although, its not exactly on the main road ).

The Venue...
HOPPITIMES AT HOPIPOLLA
Hoppipola, Khar - W

A warm, friendly and very spacious place, it looked just the perfect place to hang around with friends. It has two sections, with sitting area in both. The hosts and staff are quite friendly.

The Insides, Bar and the Crowd...
HOPPITIMES AT HOPIPOLLAHOPPITIMES AT HOPIPOLLAHOPPITIMES AT HOPIPOLLA

The crowd kept coming and going, the entire time; so, it seems a popular place with young adults. It has nice music playing all the time, and the whole place can be great to watch live-matches on their large screen. On the outside section, it has nice place for birds to fly about.

Introduction to the New Cocktails...Hoppi Specials & Jinni Martinis
HOPPITIMES AT HOPIPOLLA

Making of the First shot of the day...
We were there for some purpose; so, soon after everyone reached, without wasting any time, we were immediately introduced to the art of cocktail-making. Some blogger volunteers made the first drink, as per the expert's instructions; and we all got to taste it, first hand! Wow!

The Sampling of different Cocktails...( correct me if I got the names mixed up )
HOPPITIMES AT HOPIPOLLA

1. Smoke Infused Desi Martini.

2. IQ

3. The third drink.

Bloggers in action in the midst of it all :-)

4. This one had an interesting salt-ring on the glass's edges, that gave a unique taste.

HOPPITIMES AT HOPIPOLLA

5. Porn Star Martini. Yeah, you heard it right :-D

HOPPITIMES AT HOPIPOLLA

6. Hoppi Bath Tub or was it the Drown in a Bucket? Nevermind, cos' sluurpy it was.

HOPPITIMES AT HOPIPOLLA

7. Da VinciTini, where we got to use the paint-brush

My verdict, after all these drinks? Well, after drinking one shot after the other in rapid succession, you tend to forget which drink tasted what :o And I must've surely missed or mixed up the names too. However, the drink with a salt ring ( 4 ) around it, and the one with chocolate ( 7 ) brushed in, certainly stayed in my mind for long. I noted, almost all the cocktail-drinks ( that included vodka -absolut/expresso, rum -white/lemon flavoured, tequila, orange liqueur, gin -gordon's, wine etc ), had some kinda fruit flavours in them ( that included watermelon, cranberry, peach, orange, kiwi, pomegranate, beetroot, pineapple, raspberry etc ), along with different herbs/spice/nuts ( like burn rosemary, basil, black pepper, coriander, hazelnut etc ) that made them so yum!!! Of course, each drink had their own unique combination. And did I get high after all that? Neah...I wanted some more \:D/ Kyunki Yeh Dil Mange More...

The Making of the Last Shot...
HOPPITIMES AT HOPIPOLLA

Again a bunch of blogger volunteers got making...shaking...and pronto, it was ready!
and guess what, it came in a...

A Karela ( bitter-gourd ) for a shot-glass.

The staff explained that, although, everyone thinks the karela might give out a bitter taste, it is not so. They do discard it, after a while especially when they see a particular stain-sign on the mouth of it. So, a disposable shot-glass it is, eh? Interesting ;-)

The Yummy Bites...
HOPPITIMES AT HOPIPOLLAHOPPITIMES AT HOPIPOLLAHOPPITIMES AT HOPIPOLLAHOPPITIMES AT HOPIPOLLA

In all these, we had some delicious bites, that accompanied the cocktails, keeping us company ( see the pics above ). It was a fun afternoon and I enjoyed the outing, and of course the various cocktails I got to taste too. Head over to Hoppipola to have similar hoppitimes like I had :-)

My Ratings :
Ambiance - 4Stars
Staff - 3Stars
Food/Drinks - 3Stars
Price - 3Stars
Will recommend!

FOOD-TASTING AT ARTIST ANANYA BANERJEES POP-UP RESTAURANT

When I first heard the term 'pop-up restaurant', my mind went in different directions trying to conjure up its real meaning. Does it 'pop up' out of the blue and then vanishes? Is it some kinda mobile restaurant, some flash-mob kinda eatery etc etc. When I reached the venue ( after getting bit lost, here & there ), I finally got it. Well...I was little close to the answer. It does pop-up, but not necessarily in the roadside ( which by the way is possible ;-); it can pop-up at someone's residence too ( like it was at Ananya's place ). Its more like a planned lunch or dinner with a specifically themed menu and for small groups, who can order much in advance of their requirements and can be anywhere ~ at someone's home or some rented place. Its a new concept and very interesting if one plans to host a special luncheon/dinner for a special group of friends. It also has options to expand later on to cater larger groups as well or provide some kinda food-delivery service to either corporate, home or parties. One thing is guaranteed - Food will be unusual, yummy & very global.

The venue, as mentioned, was at Artist Ananya Banerjee's own house. When I stepped in, I was literally awestruck. It was like stepping into an art gallery, with many priceless paintings hung everywhere, also tastefully done up interiors. The home impressed me so much, that I was really curious if the food will live up to that expectation as well. And needlessly to say it did. The Menu was supposed to give us a taste of international cuisines that Ananya has learnt and practiced herself, over the years via her varied travels. She is an avid globe trotter ( me so envies her ). During her various travels, more than sight-seeing she preferred to explore different authentic local-cuisines instead, that has culminated today in her being a food-stylist cum expert.

The Wine & Starters...

For this pop-up restaurant event, Ananya specially prepared 10 delicacies from 10 different countries; recipes that are also straight from her new book 'Planet Gastronomy'. When I entered, there were already a few bloggers biting merrily into some yummy starters and I was lucky to get a few pieces myself, else, I was sure they'd have finished those up within seconds - so yummy they were. I was first served with refreshing chilled white wine ( Sangrias ) which was flavoured with mint, lemon rinds and pineapples, setting my taste buds tickling away already. The starters ( refer pictures above ) were the very unusual and tasty Pae De Quicho from Brazil, Guacamole Mexico - that is essentially Nachos accompanied with a yummy dip, Swedish meat balls and Water melon infused jello shots with Vodka. SLURP!

The Demo...

The teacher and eager students :-)

We were then treated into a live-demo of Khow Suey, an intricate but very easy delicacy from Burma/Myanmar. The whole preparation was interesting to watch as Ananya told us about the various ingredients used. It was ready in no time and all of us were craving to have it.

The Khow Suey & Grand Main Course...

YUM YUM YUM.....

Using roasted besan ( gram flour ) and coconut milk as a base, various vegetables like coloured bell peppers, broccoli, zucchini etc ( for non-veg version meat can be used ) are used in the spicy-tangy gravy. The spices used are Indian and easily available in the market. Once prepared one can add various toppings of their choice ( noodles, mushroom, caramalized onions, sprouts, roasted peanuts, boiled eggs, boiled chicken pieces etc ).

A Meal for an entire army or what! Look at the preparation - simply mind-blowing to say the least. After the delicious round of Khow Suey tasting, we couldn't wait to attack the main course, that looked so tempting. The main course consisted of Mango Salad, Malaysian Nasi Lemak made of sticky rice and chilly+tamarind+fried onion paste on top, Moroccan Harissa Couscous made of Khus Khus sprinkled with promeganate seeds, Bobotie of South Africa which is a layered minced meat baked-dish delicacy having an egg-custard layer on top, Paneer Sate Malaysia and Moroccan Piri Piri Prawne. Each dish had its own unique taste and all are authentic preparations.

The Break and then attack again, this time... the Desserts!

With our tummy full, we chatted a bit before attacking the desserts - the New York Cheese Cakes and Australian desert Lamintons. And Bloggers did what bloggers do best - click, eat, click, eat :-)

The Book Signing...

Authoring a book too, of 100 recipes from over 60 countries, hers is truly a-one-of-a-kind book you must get, to explore different world cuisines. A day well spent, it was finally time to head back home. Thank you Ananya & Robin for being such fabulous hosts. Do invite me again :D
