( FORTUNE ) THE SAVOY HOTEL, MUSSOORIE - INDIAS MOST HAUNTED

Photo Travelogue :
Read first part - Here!

Hola...I'm back from my brief hiatus. I was so busy in the off-line world; plus with very limited connectivity, I simply didn't get enough time to do what I love doing most ~ blog. Anyways, here's continuing where we left off. The journey continues...

Haunted SAVOY HOTEL MUSSOORIE

As I wrote in my last post ( of the series ), there was a particular reason why I was in Mussoorie. To visit the Savoy ~ one of most haunted hotels/places, in India ( and world ). It has an almost bizarre ( murder ) history ( mystery ) attached to it; almost unbelievable one at that, but, nonetheless, one enough to give you the chills. My travels must include a visit to the location's most spookiest place(s) ( am a die-hard spook fan after all ), and so, The Savoy was on my agenda, right from the word go. However, on going there, I realized making the mistake of not taking prior permission from the hotel's authorities and hence met with few obstacles in achieving my purpose. But, as you know, when one door closes, God opens another one. And he did this time too - read on how...

When I landed in the main bus depot ( tempos/sumos too halt there ), just a few steps ahead stood the famous Mussoorie Library. It was the Savoy's restaurant once in the past, so, the hotel must be somewhere behind, I thought. The hotel is not visible from outside. It is hidden further up the hill. I had seen a huge glow-sign ( from the depot onwards itself ), and immediately knew my hunch was right. So, I walked ahead towards right ( on the road that leads to Kempty Falls ), and right in the corner ( on left ) was the huge gates of The Savoy. I was excited as hell. So, confidently, I walked towards the entrance. However, the guards stopped me. Eh...I thought. Let me get in, I wanted to yell. He made few inquiries as to who or what I wanted to visit. I said, its a historic place and since I cover interesting places in my travels I wanted to capture the hotel too and write about it. So, calls between the entrance gate's intercom and the reception/lobby soon followed, as the guard took permission from those inside, whether to let me in. I repeated the story with a certain gentleman who spoke from reception. He agreed to let me in at first, but later, refused saying he doesn't have full authority to grant me access to take photographs of the premises. That I should take permission from the higher-ups. Phew...my hopes started dwindling and my entire mission started collapsing before my very eyes. I wanted to push my way in, as it was not everyday that I'd be going there ( the gentleman had asked me to try next time, duh! ). Finally, the size of the guard stopped me from pushing past him further to meet with the famous ghosts in the hotel :| I felt like a nosy paparazzi that time, only the celebs I was stalking were the ghosts, lol. *Sigh* Anyways, thus, I started to retreat and started covering rest of Mussoorie's attractions instead. But my heart was still lurking somewhere back in the Savoy the entire time. Later on I realized, it'd have been easier to tell them I wanted to visit the hotel's restaurant for lunch, and they'd have obliged as a guest or customer. Duh! Stupid me.

I was in Mussoorie the entire day, and soon it was time to head back. I was to catch the last bus ( around 5pm ), back to Dehradun and then to Haridwar. There was still about fourty minutes or so left and I stood opposite the massive Mussoorie Library ( near the bus stop ) wondering if I'd have any luck at all that day. I had a great time wandering round the hill-station, but my main purpose was still left incomplete. Then, I remembered the glow-sign which I had seen earlier. Interestingly, it was on the left road, I noticed, which I hadn't gone on yet. What's the harm I thought, and decided to go left this time. I walked uphill, passing by some of Fortune's other properties. Then, on right, a red signboard caught my attention. There were some old structures in the hill, where the signboard was. It read - Savoy Hotel. I wondered if there was another entrance to the hotel, and kept walking curiously. Then, after a while, I indeed came upon a huge gate. Only this time, there was a stark difference. This gate/entrance was not as posh or grand like the previous one. Maybe, it was for the staff and not guests, hence, the condition was not as swanky. It actually looked very quaint and spooky. I saw a lone guard sitting under the trees in a steel chair, not far from the opening, and knew this was my chance. I made a go for it, instantly. Fortunately, he turned out to be a friendly and quiet talkative fellow.

I asked him, if it was the famous Savoy we keep hearing about or saw on TV. He said, it indeed was. Then, I asked him if the spooky rumours around it were true. He told me the murder story related to it and also confirmed its spookiness. In his own words - 'Kya sahi hai. Ha bilkul sahi hai. Ha hota rahta hai. Abhi bhi. Bohot logon ne dekha hai. Middle block mei ek area hai ' shows with this hand, 'jo ab locked hai. Piche side servants quarters hai. Log waha se gujarte rahte hai, tab dekha hai. Par waha koyi nahi jata, jo area bandh hai, kyunki ajeeb ghatnayein hoti hai waha.' He pointed to the building just behind, and said, it happened everywhere. ( also in the main building centre block esp the upper floors ). Even he had seen and felt the eeriness often. I asked, how he sat alone in that spooky area and he just shrugged, that it was his job after all. He so enthusiastically told me all the stories, that had I been in not such a hurry, he'd have continued merrily. I look several pictures of the rear side of Savoy which is not renovated like the front part, and still resembles like it did in the past. Infact, the first floor of the middle block of the main hotel he mentioned is not renovated as well, unlike the ground floors and other wings. That block and other portions in the outer locked sections still looks abandoned, spooky with broken window glass and dust gathered which is quite contrast to the other posh areas of the hotel and is visible to all. Strange no? And oh, the guard too posed for me. Can you see something behind him? Look in that balcony. I regret not being able to spend time alone in the premises ( like I usually prefer ), to experience the spook myself, but whatever little I got to experience on the historical grounds was so worth it as well.

After spending rest of the remaining time in the Savoy grounds, chatting up the guard, I finally headed back. I had a eerie feeling of being watched from some of the rooms in the hotel, as I made my way back to the plains. The feeling continued as I retired for rest of the night at my Haridwar hotel room. Note : I wished I could go to the famous haunted Lambi-Dehar mines of Mussoorie ( in its outskirts, near Landour area ) and a certain death-pit corner ( on same route, where accidents used to occur frequently ) too that day, but it was too late. Maybe, some other time :-)

MUSSOORIE THE HILL STATION - A DAY IN PICTURES

Photo Travelogue :
Read first part - Here!

My last few posts have been on Mussoorie - the Hill Station. I was so enchanted by it ~ its really pretty. Although, I must say, I hated the fact that it was so crowded with tourists. Without the crowd, it'd be just so awesome ~ romantic as well as spooky ( which I love ). Well, here's another pictoral post wherein I'm posting some of my Mussoorie clicks.

The very famous Mussoorie Library, that was once part of Hotel Savoy and was its restaurant.

There are many signs on the narrow roads, so there's very little chance of one getting lost, unless you wander off into the jungles or hills. In between all these, I spotted an aquarium too :-)

After my little Camel's Back road trek, I walked back on the Mall road, towards the Library. Almost all hill stations has a 'Mall road'. The Mussoorie's Mall road was around 3-4 kms in length ( from one end to the other ). Needless to say, mists/rains/clouds/fogs etc notwithstanding, I clicked away whatever I could. I enjoyed trotting about the Mall road immensely.

Can you spot the Hotel Savoy signboard?

The entire duration of my Mussoorie trip, I had only one place in my mind - the very famous, legendary and super haunted Hotel Savoy ( read about it on my next post ). No matter, which corner of the hill I was, I tried to locate it. There was a purpose behind it, which I'll reveal later ( some of you may know already ). I saw the signboard from afar, and it seemed as though it was beckoning at me. And, I was like - Wait a bit, I'm coming shortly. I simply had to go there.

So, when I finally reached the Library, where Mall road ends, I made my way to the 2nd gate of Hotel Savoy ( on left of the library ). Well, to be frank, I didn't know at that time. All I knew was, there was a signboard that side; it was calling out to me, and I had to go and investigate it. The main gate is on the Kempty road side ( on right of the library, just behind it ).

By 4.30-5pm, after quite an adventurous day, I decided to head back to Dehradun ( by bus ). From there, I'd go to Haridwar, which was my base. Don't miss my next post on Hotel Savoy.

TREKKING THE SECRET WAY TO CAMELS BACK ROAD, MUSSOORIE

CAMELS BACK ROAD, MUSSOORIE

Mussoorie is a small town, so all places are quite nearby. Although, it can be a bit confusing for a first timer. But the good thing is, you eventually find your way around. Like, when I was walking the entire Mall Road, whenever I asked any rickshaw-wala how to reach Camel's back road, everyone would point at the opposite direction and say there was another road to it, and that I had come the wrong way. They'd then of course offer me a ride up there for a few bucks. Some did say, there was a road from the Mall road too, but no body was clear about it ( where/how ). So, as I was too lazy to turn all the way back, I kept walking in the Mall Road itself, hoping, I'd find the elusive way to Camel's back road eventually. But, what I didn't expect was the Mall road itself to end suddenly. I found myself at the edge of the Mall Road. There was no way further ahead. However, on the left, another road went up a steep climb. I decided to follow it, and asked few more shop-owners. Few shook their head, saying there was no such road and that I came the wrong way. Just when I was about to give up, a shop-owner called me back and showed me a secret way, and told me to go via it. He said, that'll I'll reach Camel's back road if I go that way. I was a little hesitant, as earlier he had shaken his head. He pointed again, so I decided to listen to his advice. I followed the directions he gave. There was another small lane ( alley of sorts ), just near where the Mall road had ended ( in the turning ). It was so narrow, it's only for walking.

There were houses on both sides of the alley, although, not a single person was around. It seemed bit scary to walk alone in it. But I kept walking, hoping, I was on the right path. Suddenly, I saw a woman coming in my direction, and heaved a sigh of relief. I asked her about Camel's back road, and she told me to just walk on. I was little relieved, as she seemed to be a local. Just when the tiny lane ( that went a steep up and down ) ended, I saw the sign ( see below )!

Finally, I heaved a huge sigh of relief. And I knew the way back too now, in case, something went wrong. I kept walking and nothing really caught my eye. It was all misty, so, everything was kinda blurred. I started wondering if Camel's back road even existed. I finally saw a small tea-stall, at a certain turn of the road, and asked its owner about it. He said, I was looking directly at it. He pointed me towards what looked like another hill. And asked me to wait a while till the clouds cleared. I got chatting with him, and did as he asked - waited. After a while, the clouds did clear a bit and I got the first glimpse of it. The shape of the hill was like a Camel's back, there was also a rock of same shape. Phew...happily I clicked pictures. The tea-stall owner told me to come in October to get best views of Mussoorie. I loved the little chat with him. He was too eager to be my guide in Mussoorie. Finally, I took another glance at the hill and decided to return.

Middle pic i.e of the Camel's back, is from google as I couldn't get clear a pic that day :s

Camel's back road is a very nice place to walk, with lovely views around. Best thing is there aren't many noisy vehicles plying, which makes the experience so pleasant. I loved it.

ATOP GUN HILL VIEW POINT, MUSSOORIE

Photo Travelogue :
Read first part - Here!

After an exciting uphill trip on the Ropeway upto the Gun hill peak, I was looking forward to my time there. However, once on top, I must say I was a little disappointed. What could've been a fabulous 360 degree angle view point ( covering the Garhwall hills, the mighty Himalayas around and the Doon Valley at one end ), it was totally ruined by vendors everywhere. These various stalls, located at the edges of the hill in a circular manner, blocked pretty much everything; leaving just tiny bits of spaces only, to see around. Phew, what a shame! I, anyways, tried to make the most of whatever I could. Aaarrgh... I so hate such ugly commercialization :x

It was raining, so, it added to the adventure!

Stalls, stalls and more stalls - from food, games to studios where one can pose in ethnic dress~
I had a cuppa coffee first, before giving it a try i.e posing in ethnic wear :-) Boy, the clothes and accessories were heavy :o They were quite warm too. There are different rates per size ( affordable ), and I ended up clicking more than I had intended. The studio owner gave me a free Mussoorie tourist guide book, and showed the Hotel Savoy and few other landmarks too from up there. There's a well-maintained loo up there at Gun Hill point, so it'll be a relief for some. In the shops, I asked couple of owners how they brought the items ( for sale) uphill. They replied, there's a village road behind, which they use.

Views from Gun Hill. Since, it was misty and raining I couldn't spot the Himalayan peaks :|
Do try going to the highest peak Lal Tibba of Mussoorie ( in Landour at over 8k feet ) as well, which I heard is awesome, where one can view the himalayan hills of Kedarnath, Badrinath and Bandarpunch etc! The best time to get awesome views would be before or after the monsoon months. However, I loved the misty, spooky air the monsoon overall gave to Mussoorie too.
